The Deep Blue

Reveille and clean up for the mornings parade.  Walk on deck before breakfast. Land in sight still on our starboard. It is very hilly and rugged what I can see of it.

There is a slight breeze from the south and a swell on the water but nothing to speak of.  The water here is of a deep blue quite different to the Atlantic green.

During day write letters etc to home.

The troops in evening hold their usual sporting item. We spend quiet evening in deck chairs watching them from the boat deck, while one of our Sergts of the East Surreys plays a few madoline* selections to us.

Retire 9.30, very hot now in the bunks of a night, and uncomfortable.

* fairly certain this is a spelling error, I think he means mandolin or madeline/madeleine, but unsure.
